Grazie alla costante crescita di popolarità delle discipline gravel, cyclocross e touring, Shimano ha potuto investire le sue conoscenze ed entusiasmo in qualcosa completamente nuovo. Mantenere il cambio estremamente preciso e la catena al suo posto su qualsiasi terreno ha costituito una specie di sfida, ma è stata vinta grazie a una serie di modifiche provenienti sia dai modelli MTB, sia dai modelli Road. Così, lo stabilizzatore incorporato (frizione) impedisce in modo affidabile che la catena sbatta contro il cambio e contro il telaio restando in posizione. Quando si passa sul fondo stradale, dove il controllo della catena non è vitale, la frizione può essere disattivata, spostando semplicemente la levetta dedicata. Il cambio è dotato di una propria vite di regolazione, sulla quale è possibile regolare la tensione del cavo, e delle pulegge con cuscinetti sigillati ed estremamente efficienti. Nella configurazione 1x11 sarà un'ottima scelta per le sfide più impegnative.
